When most people are heading home at the end of an evening, Street Pastors Tavistock are just beginning their work. Every Friday and Saturday night, trained volunteers from local churches walk the streets of Tavistock to offer practical help, reassurance and a caring presence for anyone who may need it.
Street Pastors exist to serve the community with kindness, compassion and understanding. Whether someone needs directions, a bottle of water, a listening ear or support during a difficult moment, the team is there to help without judgement.
Caring for People on Tavistock’s Streets
Street Pastors are Christian volunteers who believe that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Their role is simple but important. They listen, care, help and support people enjoying a night out while working to make Tavistock a safer place for everyone.
Many situations are resolved simply by being present. A friendly conversation, calm reassurance or practical assistance can often prevent problems from becoming more serious. The team also helps reduce vulnerability by offering support to those who may feel isolated, distressed or unsafe.
Working Together for the Community
Street Pastors Tavistock forms part of a nationwide movement that began in 2003. Today, Street Pastors serve towns and cities across the United Kingdom and around the world.
Locally, the team works closely with Devon & Cornwall Police, the local authority and other community organisations. This partnership helps ensure that everyone can enjoy Tavistock’s evening economy in a safer and more welcoming environment.
Each volunteer completes comprehensive training before serving on the streets. They patrol in pairs, providing visible reassurance while offering practical care wherever it is needed.
